Foto Ami Vitale siert cd-cover
Het zal niet vaak voorkomen dat een muzikant voor zijn cd een foto kiest van een fotojournalist in plaats van een gelikte plaat van een publiciteitsfotograaf.
Toch is dat precies wat de Amerikaanse singer/songwriter Brian Franklin deed. Op de voorkant van zijn nieuwe cd Desert Farmer prijkt een foto van Ami Vitale. Het werk van Franklin bestaat dan ook niet uit onbezorgde niets-aan-de-hand liedjes, maar kenmerkt zich door politiek geëngageerde teksten tegen de achtergrond van recente oorlogen zoals die in Irak en Afghanistan.
Ami Vitale over de coverfoto (uit het jaar 2000): "It was taken the morning after a late night rampage of an orphanage in Angola. Rebels were looking for food and things to steal and they killed the guard and a child. It struck me as so deeply disturbing not only because of the tragedy but because the children were so disconnected. They simply had shut down their emotions and observed the scene with an indefinable coolness. Most of them had lost both their parents to the then 25-year-old conflict and they witnessed this sort of thing on a daily basis. People were starving and the situation had become seemingly hopeless."
